About the Center for State Service Innovation

Our Mission

States have long been catalysts for innovation in national service. Yet this progress has often come in isolation, a bold step forward in one state without the infrastructure, expertise, or resources to scale the effort elsewhere.

The Center for State Service Innovation was established in 2025 by America's Service Commissions and Service Year Alliance to bridge this divide. We work with states to develop, launch, and sustain innovative approaches to service, connecting state leaders with one another and the broader national service field, and with the expertise and resources they need to succeed.

Now, growing interest from Governors and new public and philanthropic investment are creating an opportunity to bring that innovation to more states and territories. The Center is helping ensure this growth is strategic, innovative, and built to last, strengthening state service while contributing to a stronger national service movement.

America's Service Commissions (ASC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association representing and promoting the 52 Governor appointed state and territorial service commissions across the United States with the mission to lead and elevate the commission network. State and territorial service commissions are governor-led public agencies or nonprofit organizations made up of more than 1,000 commissioners, private citizens leading the nation's service movement and administering more than 75 percent of the federal AmeriCorps funds to address pressing community needs.

Service Year Alliance is a national nonprofit organization working to make a year of paid, full-time service, a service year, a common expectation and opportunity for all young Americans. We envision a future in which national service is an integral part of growing up in America, with one million young people serving their communities each year. To make this vision a reality, we partner with states, agencies, and local organizations to expand the number of service year opportunities through new models and funding sources, and elevate the voices, experiences, and impact of those who serve.
